Barbara Shelley earned her place as “The First Leading Lady of British Horror” for a reason. From the start of her career in the early 1950’s, she exuded a sexuality and charm that couldn’t help but draw you in. The first film that got her notice in the horror genre was AIP’s British production Cat Girl (1957), but she continued to act in the genre many times over. She worked for Hammer Studios many times, and in some of their best loved films, holding her own against studio giants such as Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, with whom she had a very sexually charged scene in Rasputin, The Mad Monk. Her most famous film to date is 1960’s sci-fi/horror classic Village of the Damned.
